Theme Ideas….Anyone..????

I’m getting ready to draw up the next set of geomorphs and I am looking for a new theme to use.  I drew up the last set using the theme, “Secret Places Between” and it worked out quite well IMHO.  So I am asking you, the readers of this blog, to give me a new theme to work from. It’s not that I lack ideas for the next theme, it’s just that maybe someone will come up with something new that I wouldn’t think of.  This will force me out of my comfort zone which is something I really need to do right now.  Anyone have any suggestions…..????

elevation changes within rooms is something I personally don’t see enough of in geomorphs.

    I’ll second elevation changes.

And then, how about a switch to non-dungeon geomorphs? Taverns & Taprooms or Houses & Hovels would be nice to see.

And what about outdoor geomorphs? You don’s see many wilderness geomorphs.

Here’s a few interesting elements to dungeon design I like slipping in from time to time, I’m sure they’ll push your comfort zone a little… =D

    * Floods and Fault Lines – Natural earth movements have caused passage ways and rooms to sink and crack, while underground stream and water basins have flooded low lying sections completely! Heavy loads are the enemy here, unstable corridors and the need to swim or sink will make the fighter rethink that heavy armour too.

    * Oubliettes and Obvallates – Long forgotten prisons and sealed away passages litter this section of the dungeon. Cells set deeply into the floor with only ceiling exits and obviously bricked in corridors offer many new places to explore, if you’re willing to risk what you might find still alive in them…

    * Vistas and Vertigo – Massive caverns with large open views and shear drops makes these areas an archers dream, multiple elevations and open topped corridors create perfect conditions for ambushes and evasion for those able to climb quickly or with ranged weaponry. (Perhaps best as a 1×2 or 2×2 tile set, if you really want to mix things up!)

    * Warrens and Webs – Something clearly lives here, and probably in vast numbers! Sticky webs and narrow cramped crawl-ways will no doubt slow any adventuring party attempting to pass through here, unfortunately the same cant be said for the native occupants!

About this blog

This blog came into being after I discovered the OSR blog scene. I was inspired by Dyson Logos and his blog, specifically his geomorph project. Check out his awesome work: "Dyson's Dodecahedron" The style and the simple elegance of his 10 x 10 squares put me on a mapping roll. I have blatently (...and respectfully) emulated his style and now have pages upon pages of geomorphs. Along with more location specific maps in that same style.

My intent for this blog is for it to be more than just maps and geomorphs. However, for now, I'm just enjoying this burst of creativity inspired by Dyson and the entire OSR community.
